            Any business owner desiring to expand his business and taking it beyond the domestic boundaries is required to obtain an import export code. It is a 10 digit code that is issued by the DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade). It is imperative for every importer and exporter to obtain this code as the goods cannot be imported without the Import Export Code and similarly, the exporter merchant cannot avail benefits from DGFT for the export scheme, etc. without IEC. What are features of Import Export Code registration?

​

  • It is mandatory for all the importers to obtain the IEC registration. This is because IEC code is necessary to be shown at the time of custom clearances and to bank at the time of sending money abroad.

  • One of the features of IEC code is that there is no need to file the return of the IEC with DGFT once you have obtained it.

  • In order to obtain the IEC code it is not mandatory that the applicant should be a company rather an individual can also apply for IEC registration.

  • The IEC code once obtained is valid for lifetime thus there is no requirement of obtaining renewal for it.

  • It is important for exporters to obtain this license in order to avail multiple benefits.

What are the documents required for applying for the Import Export Code registration?

​

  • PAN card of business entity.

  • List of partners or directors in case of partnership firm/Limited Liability Partnership firm or Company respectively along with their residential address, ID proof, passport size photograph and PAN card.

  • Articles of Association (“AOA”) and Memorandum of Association (“MOA”) in the case of company or LLP agreement in the case of LLP or Partnership Deed in the case of Partnership firm.

  • Bank Account statement.

  • Certificate from banker as per the format is given in Appendix 18A

 

What is the procedure of applying for the Import Export Code Registration?

  • The applicant must go the official portal of DGFT at http://dgft.gov.in/ and then click on the “IEC online application”. Further, the applicant will be asked to enter his PAN details.

  • In order to create a new IEC application the create option from the file menu must be selected and then the details of the applicant must be filled.

  • After completing the form the payment must be of Rs 250 using the selected bank option.

  • Lastly the supporting documents as discussed above must be uploaded.

  • After the application is completed and submitted to the DGFT the Import Export code will be generated and given to the applicant within the time period of two to three weeks.
